Most fans agree that the second attempt turned out much better than the original. they sound the same as the 1999 series (im referring here to the local dub) almost all of them.i still remember them since the reruns weren't that long ago. the voices of alot of minor character sounds familiar.Kurapica, Gon, and Killua retained their VA(although Killua was voiced by the one that voiced him in the GI ova ,still its nice .the same happened for Hisoka's voice for the 2011series 1999 has its flaws but it's the version that made me love hxh and to this day York shin city is my favorite arc because of how 1999 showed it. It was so dark & sinister. Compare the uvogin vs kurapica fight in 1999 vs 2011, the 1999 vibe was perfect for the scene Don't forget 1999s op for this arc too, my favorite op in any anime. It has a slightly different tone that some people even prefer over the 2011 version. If you've seen the 2011 anime at least once already, then go with the 1999 version. I don't think it's quite as good but it still holds up and I do think there are some specific moments that better executed in the older version. Maybe not. 1999 had to have a slower pace and filler because it couldn't out pace the manga at the time. If it had a completed CA arc to animate, it might not have had a slower pace. The light and the gore were perfect in the 2011 version of the Chimera Ant arc. Hunter × Hunter is quite a large series which has an anime starting in 1999 and one starting in 2011. The latter is longer (currently at 80 episodes versus 62 from the original), and is said to follow the manga more faithfully. I have not read the manga, nor seen either series. Adrian Marcano from Inverse considered Hunter x Hunter 2011 to be one of the greatest anime series ever. He said that the anime set itself apart with one of the greatest story arcs in anime history in which the villain, not the hero, takes the anime to instant classic status. If you liked the old style then watch the first 70 episodes of 1999 (62 episodes + 8 episodes of OVA1) ..so you could finish the spiders arc in the old versionand then continue watching from episode 59 (the start of the greed island arc) of the 2011 version.
